Praise and Prayer

I will tell of the kindnesses(A) of the Lord,
    the deeds for which he is to be praised,
    according to all the Lord has done for us—
yes, the many good things(B)
    he has done for Israel,
    according to his compassion(C) and many kindnesses.
He said, “Surely they are my people,(D)
    children who will be true to me”;
    and so he became their Savior.(E)
In all their distress he too was distressed,
    and the angel(F) of his presence(G) saved them.[a]
In his love and mercy he redeemed(H) them;
    he lifted them up and carried(I) them
    all the days of old.(J)
10 Yet they rebelled(K)
    and grieved his Holy Spirit.(L)
So he turned and became their enemy(M)
    and he himself fought(N) against them.

11 Then his people recalled[b] the days of old,
    the days of Moses and his people—
where is he who brought them through the sea,(O)
    with the shepherd of his flock?(P)
Where is he who set
    his Holy Spirit(Q) among them,
12 who sent his glorious arm(R) of power
    to be at Moses’ right hand,
who divided the waters(S) before them,
    to gain for himself everlasting renown,(T)
13 who led(U) them through the depths?(V)
Like a horse in open country,
    they did not stumble;(W)
14 like cattle that go down to the plain,
    they were given rest(X) by the Spirit of the Lord.
This is how you guided your people
    to make for yourself a glorious name.

15 Look down from heaven(Y) and see,
    from your lofty throne,(Z) holy and glorious.
Where are your zeal(AA) and your might?
    Your tenderness and compassion(AB) are withheld(AC) from us.
16 But you are our Father,(AD)
    though Abraham does not know us
    or Israel acknowledge(AE) us;
you, Lord, are our Father,
    our Redeemer(AF) from of old is your name.

The Lord, the Lord Almighty—
he touches the earth and it melts,(A)
    and all who live in it mourn;
the whole land rises like the Nile,
    then sinks like the river of Egypt;(B)
he builds his lofty palace[a](C) in the heavens
    and sets its foundation[b] on the earth;
he calls for the waters of the sea
    and pours them out over the face of the land—
    the Lord is his name.(D)

“Are not you Israelites
    the same to me as the Cushites[c]?”(E)
declares the Lord.
“Did I not bring Israel up from Egypt,
    the Philistines(F) from Caphtor[d](G)
    and the Arameans from Kir?(H)

“Surely the eyes of the Sovereign Lord
    are on the sinful kingdom.
I will destroy(I) it
    from the face of the earth.
Yet I will not totally destroy
    the descendants of Jacob,”
declares the Lord.(J)
“For I will give the command,
    and I will shake the people of Israel
    among all the nations
as grain(K) is shaken in a sieve,(L)
    and not a pebble will reach the ground.(M)
10 All the sinners among my people
    will die by the sword,(N)
all those who say,
    ‘Disaster will not overtake or meet us.’(O)

Israel’s Restoration

11 “In that day

“I will restore David’s(P) fallen shelter(Q)
    I will repair its broken walls
    and restore its ruins(R)
    and will rebuild it as it used to be,(S)
12 so that they may possess the remnant of Edom(T)
    and all the nations that bear my name,[e](U)
declares the Lord, who will do these things.(V)

13 “The days are coming,”(W) declares the Lord,

“when the reaper(X) will be overtaken by the plowman(Y)
    and the planter by the one treading(Z) grapes.
New wine(AA) will drip from the mountains
    and flow from all the hills,(AB)
14     and I will bring(AC) my people Israel back from exile.[f](AD)

“They will rebuild the ruined cities(AE) and live in them.
    They will plant vineyards(AF) and drink their wine;
    they will make gardens and eat their fruit.(AG)
15 I will plant(AH) Israel in their own land,(AI)
    never again to be uprooted(AJ)
    from the land I have given them,”(AK)

says the Lord your God.(AL)

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord(A) and in his mighty power.(B) 11 Put on the full armor of God,(C) so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,(D) but against the rulers, against the authorities,(E) against the powers(F) of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.(G) 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God,(H) so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist,(I) with the breastplate of righteousness in place,(J) 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.(K) 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith,(L) with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.(M) 17 Take the helmet of salvation(N) and the sword of the Spirit,(O) which is the word of God.(P)

18 And pray in the Spirit(Q) on all occasions(R) with all kinds of prayers and requests.(S) With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying(T) for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me,(U) that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly(V) make known the mystery(W) of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador(X) in chains.(Y) Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Final Greetings

21 Tychicus,(Z) the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell you everything, so that you also may know how I am and what I am doing. 22 I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are,(AA) and that he may encourage you.(AB)

23 Peace(AC) to the brothers and sisters,[a] and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.[b]

  1. Ephesians 6:23 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family.
  2. Ephesians 6:24 Or Grace and immortality to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ.

37 On the last and greatest day of the festival,(A) Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.(B) 38 Whoever believes(C) in me, as Scripture has said,(D) rivers of living water(E) will flow from within them.”[a](F) 39 By this he meant the Spirit,(G) whom those who believed in him were later to receive.(H) Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.(I)

40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.”(J)

41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.”

Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee?(K) 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants(L) and from Bethlehem,(M) the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people were divided(N) because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.(O)

Unbelief of the Jewish Leaders

45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”

46 “No one ever spoke the way this man does,”(P) the guards replied.

47 “You mean he has deceived you also?”(Q) the Pharisees retorted. 48 “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him?(R) 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.”

50 Nicodemus,(S) who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51 “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”

52 They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”(T)
